The 600-acre Lake St. Louis and the 85-acre Lake Ste. Louise are the heart of the city, and they are private, owned and run by the Lake St. Louis Community Association. Members get the lakes, the beaches, the boating, and the association's other amenities, funded by a property assessment. The city grew up around the water beginning in 1968, incorporated as Harbor Town in 1975, and took the Lake St. Louis name in 1977. Today it covers about 8.7 square miles, nearly a square mile of it water, and the 2020 census counted 16,707 residents.
Off the water, The Meadows at Lake Saint Louis is the open-air shopping district anchored by Von Maur, SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital is inside the city, and the National Equestrian Center hosts horse shows through the year.
